Some projects change everything about how a property looks from the street. This Boston exterior staircase rebuild is one of them. What started as a failed concrete structure — crumbling, unsafe, and long overdue for replacement — became a grand multi-landing entrance that now defines the entire approach to the home.

The Demo

The old staircase came out completely. That meant demolishing deteriorated concrete, stripping back the hillside, and removing the failing retaining wall structure on both sides. When you’re rebuilding a grade like this, there’s no patching or working around what’s there — you start clean and build it right from the ground up.

The Build

The new staircase runs the full elevation change from driveway level to the upper deck — a significant grade requiring multiple landings and a proper retaining structure on both sides. Block retaining walls were rebuilt along the full run, capped with stone-top pillars that frame each landing. The treads are large-format gray pavers, set with tight joints and consistent reveal. At the top, a herringbone paver landing ties everything together before reaching the deck level. The mature landscaping flanking both sides frames the whole approach and makes the finished staircase look like it was always meant to be there.

The Result
